Excursions & Post-Conference Trips

During the registration process you will be asked whether you wish to book an organised Wednesday afternoon trip, as well as whether you wish to book a post-conference trip.

Be aware that the post-conference trip to the Eifel has a registration deadline, which is 3. July 2026. You can find all information regarding the Wednesday afternoon and post-conference trips on the respective webpages.

Mentor/Mentee program

The mentor/mentee program pairs students and early career PhDs new to the community with an experienced mentor to discuss research and become more integrated into the Meteoritical Society community. A mentor typically is at least an experienced PhD, who will meet with 1-3 mentees during the meeting to discuss research, help navigate the meeting, and facilitate introductions to other members. A mentee is a current student or EC (<10 years post-PhD, not including any career interruptions), who would like to be paired with a mentor during the meeting. The mentor/mentee program had great success in previous meetings, and we would be delighted to have similar interest as in previous years. We will do our best to pair mentees with mentors based on common research areas and to accept all mentees who apply.

Early-Career Scientist Lunch

Students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists (within 10 years of completing your PhD) are warmly invited to join the Early-Career Scientist Lunch on Sunday the 9th, free of charge. The lunch will also feature four senior scientists, leaders of successful planetary missions, who will join the group to engage informally and share their experiences and insights. The event is limited to 100 participants and will be held in a traditional German restaurant in the heart of Frankfurt.

Conference Dinner

You will also need to register whether you wish to participate in the conference dinner on Wednesday evening. We booked a spacious ballroom, but in case of high attendance numbers, places will be given on a first come first served basis. The conference dinner is a vegetarian buffet with a range of options for various dietary needs. If you have particular dietary needs, please contact us at [email protected].

Pre-Conference Workshop

NASA’s Astromaterials Data System (Astromat) is running a workshop titled ‘Data Management Bootcamp for Astromaterials Researchers’ as a pre-conference workshop on Sunday, 9. August 2026 from 12:30 – 17:00 (including lunch) (1 pm – 5 pm). Details on the workshop are provided on the workshop subpage.

Special Sessions

During abstract submission you have the option to select one of two special sessions. Five further special sessions have been proposed but not yet scheduled, as their topics overlap with each other or with typical MetSoc sessions. Should you have a preference for one of these further proposed special sessions, please indicate this in the additional form during abstract submission, which will influence which special sessions will be scheduled for MetSoc

All information on the special sessions can be found on the Special Sessions page.

Awards & grants

The Meteoritical Society is proud to offer a wide range of travel support. You can apply for a travel award during abstract submission. Information on the various travel awards are provided on the respective Meteoritical Society webpage: https://meteoritical.org/awards/annual-meeting-travel-awards

Awards for best oral contributions

Information on the McKay and Wiley awards, as well as previous winners are provided on the respective Meteoritical Society webpage: https://meteoritical.org/awards/mckay-and-wiley-awards

Use of Meteorite Names

All abstracts should follow the “Best Practices for the Use of Meteorite Names in Publications” (Heck et al., 2019). All meteorites that are cited in abstracts must have official names approved by the Meteoritical Society’s Nomenclature Committee. Authors can use the Meteoritical Bulletin Database to check the status of a meteorite name. Meteorite names must be approved by the Nomenclature Committee, not pending or provisional names. New meteorites not yet approved by the Nomenclature Committee must be submitted by no later than April 7, 2026,to be considered in time for the abstract submission deadline. To submit a meteorite classification and name for approval, contact the Editor of the Meteorite Bulletin at [email protected].

The full names of meteorites should be used in titles, subheadings, and the first time they are mentioned in the text. Abbreviations, including those published in the Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter and the Meteoritical Bulletin, may be used in tables and elsewhere. In the abbreviated form, there should be a space between the place name and the number. Antarctic meteorites recovered prior to 1981 may have an A after the blank space.

All meteorite names included in abstracts must be listed on the abstract submission form. Submitters are asked to carefully check the spelling and compliance of meteorite names within both their submitted abstract(s) and form(s). A representative of the Meteorite Nomenclature Committee will review the abstracts to ensure that all authors follow the rules stated above. The program committee reserves the right to reject any abstract adhere these rules.
